What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is unique because it is the first dual action drug in it’s class. It acts as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist and a glucosedependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonist.  It is currently the MOST effective weight loss medication, it is now available in a compounded format.

How does Tirzepatide work?

Tirzepatide is a dual action medication.  GLP-1 and GIP are both incretin hormones, which are hormones that are released after eating. Tirzepatide works by mimicking their effects including telling the pancreas to release insulin after eating and signaling the liver to lower the amount of glucose it’s making, which helps lower blood sugar. They also signal the brain to help slow down gastric emptying, decrease food intake and, modulate fat utilization which leads to weight loss.  Other similar injectable weight loss medications like Semaglutide and Liraglutide only mimic one incretin — GLP-1. It’s thought that because tirzepatide acts like two incretins, it can cause MORE weight loss than current alternatives.

Tirzepatide has not been approved by the FDA for weight loss specifically, but it has been granted Fast Track designation to be reviewed for the treatment of obesity and overweight. This means they will review and potentially approve it for weight loss sooner than is typical for medication approval.

How is Tirzepatide administered?

It is a quick, once weekly subcutaneous injection administered to the patient in the office. The medication dose starts low and is increased gradually as the patient tolerates it.
